The Shirtfront - Noir

Introducing the Shirtfront in the Noir colourway. This garment is a re-creation of an American mens 'dickey' (or detachable tuxedo front) from 1839, sourced from the Met Museum archives.

Our version is pattern-made to be worn comfortably on its own or layered, and we have designed busted and non-busted styles fitted for a variety of body types. It is perfect for a hot summer's day or to party in!

The Shirtfront is constructed from a locally sourced deadstock rayon taffeta - a breathable regenerated wood pulp fibre that has a silk-like crisp hand. It is lined with a soft cotton voile and finished with a silver buckle halter neck closure; a silver toggle closure at the chest to keep the bust comfortably contained; and a simple tie at the back of the waist.

The archetype of the Dickey was traditionally made for the lower-socioeconomic class to save on laundering and fabric costs. Often they were cheap and disposable, sometimes made from paper or cardboard. Like always, we are fascinated by the history of costume and will always revisit the archives to inform our design practice.
